Time is What Prevents Everything from Happening at Once: Propagation Time-conscious Influence Maximization

چکیده
The influence maximization (IM) problem as defined in the seminal paper by Kempe et al. has received widespread attention from various research communities, leading to the design of a wide variety of solutions. Unfortunately, this classical IM problem ignores the fact that time taken for influence propagation to reach the largest scope can be significant in realworld social networks, during which the underlying network itself may have evolved. This phenomenon may have considerable adverse impact on the quality of selected seeds and as a result all existing techniques that use this classical definition as their building block generate seeds with suboptimal influence spread. In this paper, we revisit the classical IM problem and propose a more realistic version called PROTEUS-IM (Propagation Timeconscious Influence Maximization) to replace it by addressing the aforementioned limitation. Specifically, as influence propagation may take time, we assume that the underlying social network may evolve during influence propagation. Consequently, PROTEUSIM aims to select seeds in the current network to maximize influence spread in the future instance of the network at the end of influence propagation process without assuming complete topological knowledge of the future network. We propose a greedy and a Reverse Reachable (RR) set-based algorithms called PROTEUS-GENIE and PROTEUS-SEER, respectively, to address this problem. Our algorithms utilize the state-of-the-art Forest Fire Model for modeling network evolution during influence propagation to find superior quality seeds. Experimental study on real and synthetic social networks shows that our proposed algorithms consistently outperform state-of-the-art classical IM algorithms with respect to seed set quality.

The nature of time has long been an obsession for philosophers, scientists, and laymen. This nearly universal interest in time is encapsulated by the fact that the quotation “Time is nature’s way of keeping everything from happening at once” has been attributed to both Woody Allen and Albert Einstein! Although some argue that time is an illusion, ongoing work has revealed that most organisms po...
متن کاملA Data-Based Approach to Social Influence Maximization
Influence maximization is the problem of finding a set of users in a social network, such that by targeting this set, one maximizes the expected spread of influence in the network. Most of the literature on this topic has focused exclusively on the social graph, overlooking historical data, i.e., traces of past action propagations. In this paper, we study influence maximization from a novel dat...
متن کاملThe puzzle of conscious experience.
Conscious experience is at once the most familiar thing in the world and the most mysterious. There is nothing we know about more directly than consciousness, but it is extraordinarily hard to reconcile it with everything else we know. Why does it exist? What does it do? How could it possibly arise from neural processes in the brain? These questions are among the most intriguing in all of science.

It’s 10 a.m. on a Thursday. You are running 45 minutes behind in seeing patients, you have a mountain of paperwork on your desk, and your staff is on edge because patients are complaining about the wait time. At your performance review yesterday, you felt unfairly assessed because of lower than expected patient satisfaction scores, and physician leadership is now saying you need to improve your...
متن کاملTimed Influence: Computation and Maximization
We consider a cost model for diffusion in a network that capturesboth the scope of infection and its propagation time: The edgesof the network have associated lengths which model transmissiontimes, and influence scores are higher for faster propagation. Wepropose an intuitive measure of timed influence, which extends andunifies several classic measures, including the well-st...
